First Tattoo? A Beginner's Guide

Your first tattoo should be a good story for the rest of your life. Most first-tattoo regrets come from rushing, not from the design. Here's the whole process, start to finish, so there are no surprises.

Before you book

Pick a design you'll still respect in ten years. Trends cycle fast; well-executed classic designs don't expire. Save reference photos of tattoos you like — your artist will use them.

Choose placement with your life in mind. Forearms, upper arms, calves, and shoulders are forgiving first spots. Hands, necks, and feet are high-visibility and higher-maintenance — save those for later.

Respect the size. Tiny tattoos with fine detail blur as they age. A slightly bigger, simpler design will look better at year ten than a tiny complicated one looks at year one.

Know the rules in Missouri. You must be 18 or older with valid ID. No exceptions — and be suspicious of anyone who offers one.

The day of

  • Eat a real meal beforehand and bring water. Low blood sugar is the #1 reason people feel faint.
  • Skip alcohol the night before and the day of. It thins your blood and shops won't tattoo you if you're intoxicated.
  • Wear something that gives easy access to the area and that you don't mind getting ink on.
  • Bring your ID.

What it feels like

Honestly? It hurts less than most people fear and more than the tough guys admit. Think a cat scratch dragged slowly, worse near bone and thin skin. It settles after the first few minutes. Sessions for small pieces usually run 30 minutes to two hours.

After — the part people skip

Your tattoo is an open wound for the first few days. Wash it gently, moisturize thin, don't pick at it, and keep it out of pools, lakes, and the sun until it's healed — about two to three weeks. Full guide: tattoo aftercare, day by day.
