A tattoo heals in about two to three weeks on the surface — and how those weeks go decides how your tattoo looks for decades. This matters double in Branson, where the rest of your vacation involves lakes, pools, and sun. Here's the plan.
Days 1–3: Keep it clean
- Leave the bandage on as long as your artist directed, then wash gently with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap, using clean hands only.
- Pat dry with a clean paper towel — not the hotel bath towel.
- Apply a thin layer of the aftercare product your artist provided. Thin means the skin looks moisturized, not greasy. Too much suffocates the tattoo.
- Expect some redness, swelling, and weeping of clear fluid mixed with a little ink. That's normal.
Days 4–14: Peeling and itching
- The tattoo will flake and peel like a sunburn. Let it. Picking pulls ink out and can scar.
- It will itch. Do not scratch — a clean, light slap or more moisturizer settles it.
- Keep washing once or twice a day and moisturizing thin, two to three times a day.
- Wear loose, clean clothing over it. Skip tight straps and waistbands across fresh work.
The Branson rules (until fully healed)
- No swimming. Not Table Rock Lake, not the hotel pool, not a hot tub, not a bath. Showers only. Soaking a healing tattoo invites infection and pulls ink.
- No sun. Fresh tattoos burn fast, and you can't put sunscreen on one until it's healed. Cover it with clothing.
- Plan around it. If lake days are the point of your trip, get tattooed at the end of the trip, not the start.
When to worry
Some soreness is normal. Call a doctor or urgent care if you see spreading redness after the first couple of days, heat and increasing pain, pus, red streaks moving away from the tattoo, or fever. Infections are uncommon from licensed shops — and very treatable when caught early.
After week three
Once the skin is smooth and closed, moisturize normally and use sunscreen every time it's exposed. Sun is the #1 killer of healed tattoos.
