The seven signs
1. Lines are clean and confident. Smooth, even, one-weight lines with no wobble, no shakiness, no doubled edges. Zoom in on portfolio photos — lines are where weak work shows first.
2. Shading moves in smooth gradients. Black-and-grey should melt from dark to light with no harsh steps or muddy patches.
3. Color is packed solid. Saturated, even color with no patchy, faded-looking spots in fresh work. Patchy fresh color heals worse.
4. The design fits the body. Good tattoos follow the shape of the muscle and move with the person. A flat design pasted on a curved body part looks wrong from every angle but one.
5. There's healed work in the portfolio. Fresh tattoos always look sharper. An artist who proudly posts healed photos — work a year or more old — is showing you the real product.
6. The work is consistent. Not one great piece and nine sloppy ones. Judge the tenth-best tattoo in the portfolio, not the best.
7. It was designed to age. Bold lines, real contrast, and details sized for skin — not paper. Tattoos spread slightly over the years; quality artists design for year ten, not day one.
Warning signs
- Portfolios with only fresh work, heavy filters, or photos taken at flattering angles only.
- Wobbly outlines visible even in the artist's own best photos.
- Every style in one portfolio, all of it mediocre — jack of all trades, master of none.
- Prices far below every other shop in town. There's a reason, and you'll wear it.
