How to Tell If a Tattoo Shop Is Clean and Safe

A tattoo breaks your skin thousands of times. The shop's hygiene is not a detail — it's the whole ballgame. In Missouri, tattoo establishments and artists are licensed through the state, and a legitimate shop will make that easy to verify. Here's your checklist.

What a safe shop looks like

  • Licenses on display. The establishment license and the artist's practitioner license should be posted or available on request. No license, no tattoo.
  • Needles opened in front of you. Every needle should come out of a sealed, single-use package — opened at your station, in front of you, every time.
  • Fresh gloves, changed often. Gloves go on before setup is touched and change any time the artist touches something outside the sterile field.
  • Barrier protection everywhere. Clip cords, machines, spray bottles, and surfaces wrapped or covered in disposable barriers.
  • Single-use everything else. Ink caps, razors, and grips (when disposable) are used once and thrown away in front of you.
  • A clean, organized station. Not "lived-in." Not cluttered. A professional station looks like a medical setup, because it is one.

Red flags — walk out

  • No license, or a vague answer when you ask about one.
  • Needles already set up before you sat down, with no sealed package opened in front of you.
  • Anyone tattooing in a kitchen, garage, or hotel room — that's not a shop, whatever the price.
  • An artist who won't answer questions about their process. Good artists are proud of their setup.
  • Willingness to tattoo someone under 18. Missouri law requires tattoo clients to be 18 or older — a shop that bends that rule bends others.

The vacation problem

Locals learn shops by reputation over years. Visitors get one look at the front counter. That's a hard way to judge what's happening at the station.

How Show-Me Ink handles it

We only match clients with licensed Missouri artists working in licensed shops. You tell us what you want through the free intake form; a working artist matches you with someone whose license, shop, and portfolio check out — and you get an upfront price before you book.
